WHT - Web Hosting Forum

Email Hosting- I know this is the Web Hosting Forums; but I'm hoping you guys can help me out with a related problem:
I am looking for a good, high quality email host. My wishes/requirements:
- IMAP [required]
- SSL encryption [required]
- Good, server-side filtering/sorting [required]
- Procmail/Sieve [both pluses]
- Hosting on an OSS stack [a plus]
- No bandwidth limits [1]
- No message transfer limits [2]
[1] I have 350-400 Mb of email stored at the moment, and I take backups. I hear good things about Fastmail; but I fear their bandwidth limits wouldn't cut it, even at the Enhanced plan (three backups, and it'd be done, basically).
[2] I am not referring to attachment/message size limits. I mean caps on how many messages I send or receive in a given timeframe. If the limits are really high (in this, Fastmail is fine), then I don't mind. But I've seen some hosts that have pretty low ones. Subscribe to a couple mailing lists and...poof.
I currently am running an email server on a VPS (Postfix/Dovecot/Procmail). But if anyone has any suggestions, I'd really like to hear them.
Thanks.

Video Sharing Website Advice- Hi
I'm creating a video sharing network. It's a project that I've invested quite a bit of money in.
At the moment my hosting (other projects) are with Rackspace UK purely because their hosting is fantastic.
The majority of my traffic will be U.S. based so I'm looking for a solution there where bandwidth is much cheaper (than the UK).
This is a serious project and I expect a couple of hundred users to start testing the site from day 1. Obviously as we grow we will need more bandwidth etc.
I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this kind of project and if so, what advice you could offer relating to hosting solutions.
We must be with a hosting company that offers lightning support. That's why I'm currently with Rackspace but their hosting is very expensive.
Thanks for any help.

Hawkhost or SharkSpace? Both seem to have positive reviews!- Both hosts seem to have positive reviews from many here.
Two big points for hawkhost that I've found from sales is that they support webdav (via cpanel) and imap-idle!
Anyone with any opinion either way? :)

Looking for hosting package to launch my forum- Hello guys! I am looking for hosting package to launch my forum! My requirements are the following: disk space - 2GB, linux based platform, Cpanel 11 (Phpmyadmin2.11.6), unlimited number of MySql 3x databases + 24*7 live chat support is obligatory! It is desirable to have unlimited number of add-on domains and email accounts as well. The more traffic and bandwidth - the better. All suggestions are welcome! Thanks in advance!

Powweb Live Technical Support- The sales Live Support of powweb is great but after signing up an account with them, the technical support seems to be very bad.
I need to wait more than one hour to get a support staff.

Is Godaddy any good? [Split from different thread]- is GoDaddy any good?

Oh dear oh dear, can not get a hold of my host (hostsimplex.com)- I some how got my self blocked again and can not get a hold of them.
I tried the number and I get a message that its a none terminating number.
I did get the owners cell phone number but when I try that I just go to vmail.
I did send support@hostsimplex.com a message and got an auto reply from the billing system.
I also tried a proxy but live support in that does not work nor can I get to the place to make a ticket because its at port 2222.

Is this kind of hosting business possible - Please read carefully- I have a very good domain name in mind (it is available too) about Website Hosting, and I want to enter into web hosting business but not as a reseller nor as a company... but this way.
1. I will make a website let say MYHOSTINGSITE and I will make a deal with some other big company let say dreamhost.com and on my website I will show all packages 100% same as they are showing on dreamhost.com
2. When someone go to ORDER page the order automatically go to dreamhost.com (URL will not change on the browser) but all functions will be running as they run on dreamhost.com
3. When he has ordered and paid the bill that company dreamhost.com should give me only few percent of the bill, let say $10-15 per customer.
4. I will not be responsible to deal with customers, my site will have only contact us page with some emails to staff, those emails will be checked by dreamhost.com staff, not me. Yes if client complaint it will make MY SITE's reputation bad but I will try to make a deal with a good reputation company to avoid this thing.
I hope I explained it right. Are you understanding my point?
Is this kind of business possible?
Thanks

fdchost.com , any one try it ?- Hi
I like FDCHost.com hosting plans but I was wondering if anybody here try their shared host before
Their plans and prices are good but when I do DNS check it give some errors http://www.intodns.com/fdchost.com
so anybody here try can give us a review about it ??
thanks

Help with hosting package please- Hiya,
I'm currently on a reseller package, and have been for the past couple of years. It's mostly friends and my own sites that I host now, no real commercial hosting.
Only one of the sites really has any major traffic, shifts about 20Gb a month bandwidth, incorporates a ShoutCast AutoDJ server, all in and takes up about 3Gb of webspace, including SQL and email. All sites combined are probably only plushing about 24-25Gb of bandwidth and taking up about 9-10Gb of webspace.
Unfortunately the company I took my current reseller account up with was bought out and to say that the transfer to them hasn't gone smoothly is an epic understatement. Finally the camels back has broken and I'm looking to move.
As well as this reseller account I also have a Teamspeak server account with another company, who have been fantastic for the past three years I've had the account and relatively cheap too.
I don't think that a reseller style package has outgrown me yet. But I'm struggling to find a reputable host that will grant a reseller account with ShoutCast provided, or even allowed due to the CPU overhead.
So I'm now considering a managed, because I'm scared lol, VPS384 package with WiredTree, due to the reviews I've read on here. Thinking that doing it this way will save money in the long run as I'd have the ability to host accounts as well as running a Teamspeak and a ShoutCast under one account.
My concerns though are security of the VPS, wiredTree offer an initial security hardening but I'm guessing it's then up to me to stay on top of that and how much time would this consume say monthly and is it in the realms of a n00b to do? RAM, how much would I honestly be looking to need to say host 10ish sites, one fairly busy community site, most of which utilise an SQL database, preferably with cPanel. Teamspeak server with say 20 slots and a ShoutCast server with upto 50 listeners streaming about 64k.
Thanks for any help, advice or proof of complete stupidity.

Zensix Hosting Review- I just joined this forum after learning about it on WickedFire. I wanted to pass along my good experience with a new hosting company I came across on that forum called ZenSix hosting. The owner has an established reputation and the service has been unparalleled (9 minute response time on the support ticket I submitted after joining). Its shared hosting, with plans starting at $25 a year, which would be enough for most noobs.
I'm not getting an affiliate cut, nor am I associated with the business or the owner in any personal way. Just lookin out for the little guy...you won't be disappointed. Check it out: zensix dot com or look around on WF for it.
Take it or leave it...

Sharing Hosting Plan- I just saw that DreamHost (dreamhost.com) is having a new promotion offering unlimited storage and bandwidth. Since all of DreamHost features (dreamhost.com/hosting.html) except domains are unlimited, is anyone interested in sharing the hosting plan? If I'm not wrong, DreamHost allows multiple web panel accounts per plan so there should not be any difference between having your own plan and sharing a plan. I am able to find a deal which will bring the cost down to $267 for 5 years. Assume that 10 people are sharing, the price per person will be $26.70 for 5 years which is extremely affordable. The unlimited storage/bandwidth promotion is ending on 10th of September.

Spry Hosting Review :(- This is my review of Spry shared hosting. This is a negative review
I bought a shared hosting account on Saturday when i noticed a problem. It said DNS Server reports a failure so i just though it was normal but i waited 72 hours and guess what it still does not work. They attempted to fix it and said it was fixed but did not even to bother to check my site to make sure it worked. The support is slow and they will not reply on Saturday or Sundays. The main con was the the broken DNS server. Just as a note accounts are hosted on a VPS not a server because in cpanel it says VPS Optimized. They did however refund me.

HostNine- Not a question exactly related to HostNines hosting ability (have read a bunch of reviews, most seem good - and we all know that the pleased people rarely speak compared to the not so pleased), but how is their affiliate program? I've seen a few worried reviews on here concerning getting paid, but seems like they were updating their system and the people did infact get paid.
They seem to be one of the only hosts (if not only?) that offer such a nice payout on referrals that may only pay $4/month. I've sent in a few tickets about the program (and received fast responses) so I'm inclined to think they're a good host as well. Every other affiliate I've looked at will pay nice comissions but only after the referral pays large upfront fees (usually yearly accounts). So, hows HostNine guys?

Monitoring with Dynamic DNS Support- A casual reader of WHT would observe that there is no perfect hosting company. They will all at one time or another have either a performance issue or an outright outage.
I think there is a simple way to address this problem: upon detecting a failure route traffic to a secondary location. This is done typically through Dynamic DNS.
There a lot of monitoring companies out there and most of them - if not all - limit their function to sending out an alert. Well, that's not good enough for an HA solution. There needs to be a way to take actual automated remedy action upon failure detection.
I think the simplest possible action would be to update IP address of a host with a backup IP through dynamic DNS. My question then is: does any one know of a monitoring service that would support this?
If you think of a cost of adding another hosting account through a backup provider especially if they both use cPanel, its minimal. And yet you would have a HA solution that enterprise customers spend millions on.

WHT - Dedicated Server Forum

Dedicated Windows Server.- Hey Folks,
I don't need much...Just a dedicated Windows server for a number of smaller websites I run (unlikely to have more than ten individuals simultaneously connected at any given time). Anyways, I have a Xen VPS with VPSLand right now, but its been down for nearly twelve hours with no resolution in sight. My current has 1024 MB RAM, I'd like to have at least that much in the new machine. Who are good dedicated providers at a reasonable cost?
Dave.

Upgrading HDD, Downgrading CPU good or bad?- I have a 2.5ghz dualquad 5420 harpertown with a 160gb hdd. I was wondering if I upgraded my hdd to a 160gb scsi 10krpm with a Intel Xeon 5130 2.0 GHz Dual Core, would I get a performance increase or a performance decrease?
I have a server that does 20k visitors per day, large forums, over 10million file requests per day.
Current Server:
2.5ghz harpertown dualquad
4gb of ram
dual 160gb hdd's
Free offsite backup
Cpanal
4,000gigs in/out bandwidth
$355 per month
Looking At:
2x Xeon 5130 2.0 GHz Dual Core
4gb of ram
dual 300k 10krpm scsi
Cpanel
4000gigs bandwidth
$380 per month (with specials)
My host has an option to upgrade my hdd for 60 bucks to a 73gb scsci 10krpm drive. Should I do that instead or go with the new host?
Anyone have an optimization tips for me instead if they think I can do that instead, but I done a ton of optimization via reputable admins including some on this forum. Mysql crashes 4+ times a day, that's why i'm wondering if a scsi hd would be better choice.

what do you recommend for a Windows dedicated server..- needed for an online payment processing platform...with Microsoft SQL on it...what kind of webhosting services do you recommend for this ??..Of course the server will have to be a dedicated one..
Many thanks

New dedicated server with e-mail sending problem (Junk mail).- Hi guys,
I have purchased a new dedicated server and I have setup some e-mail accounts for various domains I got.
I have then setup Domain keys and SPF records as for the e-mail authentication in the cpanels of those domains, but whenever I send someone an e-mail, it's getting into his junk folder instead of his inbox.
The problem is generally happening with hotmail and yahoo users, while gmail seems to be white listing my e-mails.
I have checked wether the ip of my new server is blacklisted somewhere , but the results showed zero blacklistings.
I haven't sent any type of spam e-mails , I barely sent some few e-mail to friends in order to see if they are still receiving my e-mails in their junk folders.
I have waited about 7 days and the problem remained , then I contacted the support of my dedicated server and they told me to get in contact with hotmail postmaster. But at hotmail's contact form page ( https://support.msn.com/eform.aspx?p...eformts&scrx=1 ) there seems to be an error when selection Yes for both questions :
- Can you telnet to port25 of mx1.hotmail.com from your mail server(s)?
- Can you traceroute to 216.32.183.201 from your mail server(s)?
It's giving me an error after hitting submit : "Enter Numbers only" for those two selections. very weird problem as it's impossible to enter numbers for those two selections.
Could anyone advise or help with my problem ? It's a serious issue affecting the launch of my project.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Suggest some reliable dedicated server- I am planning to switch to a dedicated server. Please suggest any reliable dedicated server providers under $200 mo budget.
I would prefer a managed dedicated server

Possible upcoming drive failure? Please help!!- Ok, so this is the second time I got an email like this from my server:
This email was generated by the smartd daemon running on:
host name: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
DNS domain: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
NIS domain: (none)
The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:
Device: /dev/sdb, 6 Offline uncorrectable sectors
For details see host's SYSLOG (default: /var/log/messages).
You can also use the smartctl utility for further investigation.
No additional email messages about this problem will be sent.
What can I do about this?
I actually COLO a box.. I sent them the server NEW, and the drive failed a week after I sent them a new one. This SECOND drive is now having errors apparently.. what can I tell my tech to do about this? Please advise me on what I can do.. (There is a chance that this could be my primary drive)
I asked FDC to check the controller and drive, and they said there was nothing they could do. Please let me know!

Which CPU Would be Better? (Thinking of Consolidating Servers)- Currently, I have 8 servers of the following configuration;
Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz
4096 MB RAM
Drive 1: 250 GB
Drive 2: 250 GB
My question is, what would be better? TWO of the above, or one of these:
2x Intel Xeon 5405 2.0 GHz Quad Core Processors
8GB RAM
Drive 1: 500 GB
Drive 2: 500 GB
The reason I ask is that I'm considering merging my 8 servers into 4 more powerful, more expensive servers. Would this be a good move?
Thank you,
Gareth

Any Netherland provider?- Hello,
We have decided to move our current provider because their payment processor problems. They can't charge my credit card directly and wanting to get from PayPal. And paypal is not allowing my country to pay directly but after registering.. We have also registered to Paypal and now there are problems with sending money limits even account is active and verified (card added + verified)
I am really tired of getting suspended while we have money but can't pay. Other payment ways don't fit to me because bank transfers get too high commissions, moneybookers says my limit is 200 euro per 60 days (very low for me)
Are there any providers you know in Netherlands that will give us servers ~80 euros (2gb ram, xeon cpu and 4-5 TB bandwidth) We have 10 servers currently but if these problems didn't occur, we would move all our services to them and get around 30 servers.
By the way my provider's name is E*catel. I love their services, network rocks and support but this problem is forcing me to do this.
Regards!

problem with sites under reseller- i have a problem in one reseller

(Harpertown or Kentsfield) Help me to choose a sever ?- Hi,
I'm looking to buy one of the following servers from SL.
Server is to host shared/reseller clients. I'm familiar with low end servers but this is the first time Im going for Xeon 3200/5400 Series. What server would be the best from the following? Is Kentsfield newer series than the Harpertown series which was there for over an year?
2X250GB HDD - 2GB RAM - Xeon 3220 - 4 X 2.40GHz - Kentsfield - 8MB Cache - $199
2X250GB HDD - 2GB RAM - Xeon 5430 - 4 X 2.66GHz - Harpertown - 12MB Cache - $209

clearancerack.ca review- I've been with clearancerack for a billing cycle now so here is my quick review. Its been a few weeks so I'll be general in my terms as my memory is rough.
The initial pre-sales support was good. I spoke with Chris and we went back and forth for about a day before I signed up. I liked what I heard and read so I signed up.
I waited patiently for a few days for the server to be setup. Around the 3rd day or so (memory is rough), I decided to shoot Chris an email asking where I was in the queue. He mentioned that it was already setup and resent the server setup notification email.
Got the server details and asked Webbycart to setup and harden the server. No issues there.
Regarding the hardware and network. I purchased a basic dual core rig and its functioning as expected. I am using Magento which is a resource hog but it runs super fast. Initial load times are consistently sub 2 seconds, and everything is nearly instantaneous.
My previous host was on the West Coast of the US. I noticed some lag when SSH'ing and in the front end of the cart. So that prompted me to move to a Canadian provider. So far no lags whatsoever... btw, can anyone tell me what would cause putty/ssh to lag?
Customer support. Not too sure yet as my management company has done everything for me thus far. The one time I did email Chris, I got a reply back within minutes from his blackberry... so thats reassuring. Honestly, I hope I never find out if the support is good or not.
Backups. Not really part of the review. Just a note to myself to make sure I setup a backup plan to ensure that hardware issues won't affect me too much, lol.
Constructive criticism: Never got the server setup email and in my account under "View Server Details Email", the email still is not there. There appears to be a bug. Please fix it. It affects at least one customer, me, so I hope its important enough to address.
Also, no bandwidth graph in my account? Not sure how I can safely monitor b/w.
Lastly, when you change your company name, please communicate this with your customers. As a business, this complicates my books as my accountant won't know that clearanceracks = carat.
On my scale of things, I'd give them a 9.5 out of 10 and will purchase more servers when the need arises. I am a businessman and at the end of the day, all I care about is can my customers get to my online store fast, consistently, and securely.

Ecatel? Not reply me- Hello,
my server with ecatel is down and them not reply me from 5 hours I sent the ticket, someone know why? Them are very bad in reply time to ticket but this time is MUCH.

WHT - Co-Location Forum

Experiences with Dell PowerConnect 5424 and 5448?- We are looking at replacing some HP Procurve 1800-24G switches with Dell PowerConnect 5448s.
Has anyone had any experiences with these devices they could share?
We would be using them for some basic Layer 2 stuff - primarily spanning tree and private VLANs.
We would run them with RPS-600 redundant power supplies (does anyone know if you can connect the switch power supply to an A power feed and the RPS to a B power feed, to get feed redunancy?)
Also, are these just branded SMC or Broadcom products, or did Dell develop them in-house?

DirectSpace.Net Colocation Need Help- I need some reviews on directspace.net colocation anyone have there server with them. How are they ? are they trustable ? is there network good or lot of downtime ? since i heard there own website is up & down lot. Give me more info on this 1 please this will be my first time colocating & i don't want to risk my server hardware with anything.
Thanks

Zogmo in Houston gone?- Just curious to see if anyone at WHT knows the status of Zogmo and Linn Boyd? I havent been able to reach anyone over there.
Replies would be appreciated.

Monitor IP traffic in Cisco- I have just configured SNMP + Linux MRTG in my Cisco 2600 router.
But I could only get it to monitor the interfaces' bandwitdh (fastetherenet0/0 and fastethernet0/1)
I have a couple ACL's , that I use to rate-limit some IPs..
Is it possible to monitor traffic for specific ACLs in Cisco 2600 routers?
I have already done port monitoring in Catalyst Switches.. But it would be cool to use non-managed switches in my DC

hardware vendor in the West coast- Can anyone suggest a good hardware vendor in the west coast? Usually, I am working with Chong at Apaqdigital, but want to see if there is any other one closer.
I have tried to contact Webnx and RME before, but usually very slow response, or they just ignore my request.
Thanks.

Best rack arrangement for cooling?- The MRI lab I'm converting into a DC only has partial raised floors. All AC, supply and returns, will be overhead. Since I have control over where the returns and supplies are located, what rack arrangement would be most efficient? Is Hot/Cold aisle still the best method, with returns above the hot aisle and supply blowing straight down into the cold aisle? I've also heard of a 'random' arrangement, where every other rack in each row is backwards.

Atlanta cabinet collocation- We have a customer who is in need of a full cabinet in Atlanta. Currently, I've attempted to contact Gnax, and I was met with a full voicemail box for the sale department.
I attempted to call Atlantanap (who from my understanding owns Gnax, or vice versa), and spoke with what I presume was a 10 year old, who never returned my call.
Switch and data says they are full and are unable to meet a reasonable installation cost.
Are there any reputable facilities I'm missing?

Google's datacenter in France- It seems that Google would be about to build a new DC in France, does anyone know something about it ? The size, the value ? The expected completion date ?
Thank you all.

Motherboard for Windows Server 2008?- Hello guys, I'm looking to build a server for our company. This server will run Windows Server 2008. Can any of you recommend a good stable motherboard that is compatible with Windows Server 2008.
I don't really care about RAID built into the motherboard. I'll be using a 3ware 9650SE-4LPML PCI Express card for Raid.
I would require minimum of 4gig of ram on the motherboard.
Looking into putting a Intel Core 2 Quad on it.
Thank you.

Choosing a Datacenter- We're in the process of choosing a data center for colocation. I'll like to get your ideas on areas we should ask questions on and the appropriate service/response we should expect.
We're looking to start with one or two servers and gradually grow to about 50 within the first year.
Also, if you have any suggestions on great data centers in the washington, dc area that would be great.
Thanks.
Anthony.

Supermicro IPMI setup for windows.- Hello.
I am having a hard time settuping up IPMI 2.0 for windows.
For linux I could just install using yum OPEN-IPMI, then start the IPMI service an have it working but for windows how do I install the drivers?
I could not connect to the IPMI for windows using the IPMIVIEW or the ipmitool from another linux box.
I have already flashed the IPMI card with the correct IP and MAC address.
I think I may need to install the drivers on the window box but am not sure how.
Any help would be great. Thanks.

Breakdown of a data center build cost- Hi everyone !
As I have to realize a marketing survey concerning the data center industry in Europe for my University (Brussels- Belgium) I would need to know some information related to the construction of a DC.
Thererfore could anyone give me his opinion about the breakdown of a data center build cost (in % of the overall amount of the construction and for example categorized by land, building, electrical, mechanical, IT,....) ?
Thank you !

Remote Management: Terminal Servers and IP server management?- Has anyone used the Perle terminal servers in their Data Center rollouts? If so, what is your success (or failure) with them?
Any other all-in-one terminal servers that are solid for connectivity to my routers and switches? Anything that integrates KVM IP as well?
Currently we are looking into Perle 32 port for our serial rj45/db9 connections and IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter II SlimLine for our servers.

bandwith estimate / provider- ok since my site is doing pretty well i want to kick up my bandwith with a better provider in dallas. ide like constant gbit speeds and would probably push around 10,000TB a month to start. would the monthly cost be >5000? that is fine i just am wondering. the idea is to have the fastest speed possible so i need only the best

WHT - VPS Forum

VPS Advantages over shared & recommended hosts?- Is it possible to get a rough description of the benefits of a VPS host over a shared host?
1) Support. Should support with a VPS host be better than my current shared provider? They offer live chat and a ticketing system. Tickets can take hours to get a response, live chat minutes but often there are no support operaters to answer the question.
2) Uptime. Will uptime be improved upon? My current host tends to range from 97%-99% in a month. Importantly will it suffer from soft outages where parts of the account are down (such as MySQL or http)?
3) Traffic. What levels of traffic will base VPS packages handle? Will a few semi active forums (say max 20 users on 3 forums) be manageable alongside several PHP/MySQL galleries and several hundred normal PHP pages?
4) Load. Does the load usage of other customers on the same server effect your account in the same way it does in a shared environment? Can one user bog down the entire server for everyone else?
5) Management. How much control is given to a user in managed VPS environment. Can you restart OS yourself (and do things like edit the firewall blocks)? Do you have to keep the OS (Linux in my case) and things like Apache and PHP up to date yourself or is that done for you.
6) Usage Policies. Are the usage policies in place in a VPS environment (limiting the amount of CPU process and memory you can use). If yes are they higher than in a shared environment.
Is it possible to get a little more on a few of the hosts I've looked at (if possible I'd like to be below the $50 a month mark).
JaguarPC ($20 / $40)
WiredTree ($50)
LiquidHost ($60)
Is it a case of picking any of these and getting a similar support and hosting service?
WiredTree seems to offer a decent compromise of price against value. Given that my site is still pretty small at the moment, would the smallest JaguarPC package be a better fit (so I'm not spending money for specs I'm not using).
Unfortunately disk space is a fairly big factor as the site uses quite a few image and small video files (I'm using something like 2GB at the moment but this would increase fairly rapidly over time). Does that mean a shared host is better suited for my needs?

MyVPSHost - Out of Business? No Response For Weeks!- We've been using MyVPSHost without many issues for years now. We use them so much that we've shipped them our own personal hard drive to operate our VPS on. They were always pretty fast and responsively up until recently.
I use cPanel on the VPS and we ran into a licensing issue in which it appears MyVPSHost has installed a server license on our VPS and not a virtual server one (We use cPanel VPS Optimized). You can't access cPanel, WHM, Webmail, etc. due to this error.
I've gotten no response back from MyVPSHost via e-mail, ticket, or phone. Every ring goes straight to voicemail and /dev/null. I've gone as far in desperation as contacting their provider, the name on the cPanel license (FastServers), however since I'm an end-user of a third party they can't help me. I also contacted cPanel who confirmed the machine is probably licensed incorrectly, however since the license wasn't purchased directly from cPanel, they can't help me either...
A quick look on their website reveals a company forum filled with recent complaints, offline servers and no replies from anyone working at the company. Is this an abandoned ship? Susy used to be very quick with everything and now I feel like she was the only person there and she passed away last week because the company isn't saying anything, she's not saying anything... we're just dead in the water.
What's the deal here? And if I get the hard drive back from them... where do I go?
Thanks.

VPS in Japan with CentOS and Lighttpd (installed myself) - Do I really need Plesk?- I need reliable VPS in Japan so heard some good things about the following company which has English service:
tsukaeru.net/en/index.php
...so I will go with them. I will get this configuration:
tsukaeru.net/en/plans/vps/detail.php
silver plan- 500Mhz/256MB
...to start with for static content only so I will use lighttpd instead of the provided Apache. The dynamic content of my project (php/mysql) for now will be hosted with unitedhosting.co.uk since I trust their reliability and will point to the Japan VPS for the static content.
Static content on the Japan VPS will be mostly flash .flv files between 100-500kilobytes each- also very small .jpg/.gif images/icons and other files to support flash and miscellaneous.
The vps in Japan uses CentOS. I'm familiar with that since I installed that in my home server with lighttpd [I get a killer connection of 120DL/10UL mbit/s with CATV so it's great for hacking together a home web server].
My main question is should I NOT have Plesk installed?
Here, when you order:
tsukaeru.net/en/plans/vps/silver_order.php
...it asks whether you want to install Plesk (they recommend it) or not. I know I will have to install Lighttpd (which I plan to do with rpm) without Plesk control panel (VPS with tsukaeru.net has full root access). Is there any advantage of installing Plesk in my case?
I need to check resources but I can do that with remote access anyway, I assume.
My feeling is I should go WITHOUT Plesk. Does anyone agree?
Thanks

VPSLand - Review.- So, VPSLand has some pretty slick prices. In spite of all the bad stuff said about them I decided to give them a try. I purchased their Windows-EZ Starter Value plan which uses Virtuozzo.
Setup:
- Not too bad, not great. Took a little while.
- Their management panels are in multiple places - not just one centralized dashboard from whence to access all other areas.
General:
- They don't automatically run backups, I had to run the backup myself.
- They didn't tell me not to apply Windows updates so I hosed my slice almost immediately.
- Apparently my slice was rebooted without me knowing it b/c I had IIS set to manual and when I woke up one day it had stopped. I set it to automatic to avoid this.
- I had all sorts of install and permission issues with SQL Server 2005/08 Express, eventually gave up.
Support:
- Support is generally slow. Takes several hours for a response even if issue is emergency.
I'm not sure how many of these issues are Virtuozzo related and how many are VPSLand. I know I don't like Virtuozzo (call me old school, I want to apply my own patches), so I decided to purchase one of their Xen VPS. I purchased the WindowsXL-1024. Here's my thoughts on that experience thus far:
Setup:
- Took a long time.
General:
- Installed Windows Updates and suddenly couldn't get out to the internet (though I could still RDC in).
- Submitted trouble ticket and they fixed it but didn't tell me how.
- They told me not to apply Windows Updates - wait, I thought thats why I just got a Xen VPS? Waiting for their response.
Support:
- Several hour response time.
Well, its only been a day or so on the Xen VPS, I'll let you know how things go.
Dave.

OpenVPN on HyperVM- Hey Everyone!
Currently trying to get OpenVPN to work on my CentOS VPS, however not getting very far with it. I have followed the guide here: http://www.throx.net/2008/04/13/open...uration-guide/
No problems with the guide, everything worked well! However when i goto start the openVPN service it fails with the following output in the log:

Sep 4 18:01:07 alpha openvpn[3137]: Cannot allocate TUN/TAP dev dynamically

I then heard that i need to check the tun adapter, so ran the command "openvpn --dev tun0" which gave this output:

Auto shutdown when load is too high? (SolarVPS)- Hi everyone,
My first post here, but I've been an anonymous reader for quite a while and have learned a lot here. So thanks for that!
Anyway, now I come to you with a question.
I am a SolarVPS customer. So far, I have been really happy with their service - setup was very smooth, I had to contact support a couple of times at the start and they were really quick, and otherwise I've had simply no problems.
I was alerted yesterday to the fact that my site was down. I immediately logged into the box, and found that Apache and MySQL had stalled. I restarted them, and everything was ok. So then I started to look into the problem.
Then I noticed this in my logs:
Quote:
Sep 3 23:07:26 myvps shutdown[26281]: shutting down for system
halt
Sep 3 23:08:41 myvps exiting on signal 15
Sep 4 03:14:22 myvps syslogd 1.4.1#18: restart.
It seems that my VPS was shut down for 4 hours and then brought back up. My Apache and MySQL didn't come back up properly after the restart (ok, my fault here, a configuration issue), so I was down for about 17 hours.
Anyway, I didn't do this shutdown, and I don't think my box was hacked and someone else did it, because even if they did, by my reasoning, it wouldn't have been down for 4 hours.
So I wrote an email to SolarVPS. They got back to me really quickly, asking me to send my server ip's and my root password (I had initially only sent my customer number). I was not really happy sending my root password over email to them, so I just sent them the server IP's.
I then got an email back saying that it was standard procedure to send my root password to the over email, and that it was secure because their helpdesk is secure. I don't know how they are securing the email connection from me to their helpdesk though (of course, it isn't secure, because email is sent in plain text), so I still haven't sent them this. I don't need them to log into my server anyway, I can see that it went down, I just wanted to know if they had brought the machine down for a reason. The whole root password over email thing is not the problem anyway.
What concerned me is the rest of their response.
They told me that they had not brought the machine down on purpose. I sent them the log lines I pasted above, and their response was:
Quote:
- shows that your VPS has been shut down, just like the owner of the VPS would have shut it down using "halt" command. This issue appears when the VPS is overloaded (RAM is almost 100% used, and CPU is upto 90-100%), and in this case Virtouzzo shuts the VPS down in order to avoid resources abuse on the entire node and not to affect the other VPS's.
This is the part that concerns me. As I understood it, the Virtualization software is there to keep you in a box, and restrict the amount of resources that a person can take up so it doesn't affect others. If my server is under heavy load, I can understand if it becomes slow, but I don't find it acceptable for it to be shut down for 4 hours!
Is this usual policy for VPS's? If this is the case, I guess I'm going to have to look for dedicated, because this is not acceptable to me. Although my server is rarely under high load, I don't want to have to worry that it might disappear for hours if it is.
It would be great to hear some opinions from people with more experience in this area than me. If true, this is definitely something people should mention as a disadvantage to VPS's.

windows vps requirements- Hello everyone,
we have a site with a lot of traffic around 100.000 visitors and 250.000 pageviews daily, each page is just 30k to 60k , we use mssql server and hit our database with a very simple query ( "select, where, order by" type ), is a small table just 9000 records. What windows vps would you guys recommend me for this kind of traffic?? What amount of RAM memory?? mssql on the same server or shared?? would mssql server 2005 express do the job??
Thank you for your help

VPS advices- After heavily reading around I didn't find a clear-cut answers.
I'm looking for VPS hosting recommended company for a single website hosting with the minimum following specification:
20 GB disk
1 Giga RAM
20 Giga Mo Bandwidth
2 Athelon / Xoen CPU's
Linux Red Hat enterprise / Centos
-Plus important issue: the option for manual physical rebooting of the server on the DC.
I also want to understand the following point:
The best (for me) is to find hosting supplier that can really deliver A-Z solution with full and professional server maintenance security, scanning, updates, upgrades, installation etc
The second question should I look for one or rely upon third side 'management server services' company?
The third question:
The specification above designed to handle up to 200 concurrent users watching third side videos from Youtube and alike, image galleries, chatting in forums and browsing around.
The specification above look enough in your opinion ?
I'm old enough to know I don't want to deal with the cheapest or the "best marketers" or "best value" offers
just a solid company with professional's support team that REALLY can and will support you 24/7.
Any answer to the questions above would be welcome.

Need a UK VPS- Hi, I need a UK VPS.
I can pay any price under £20/month
I require 3/4IPs, 786 RAM, 468Mhz or better processor
CentOS 5.2 with cPanel/WHM
Allows shoutcast hosting.
Unmetered bandwidth.
Thanks.

Motherboard Recommendations - OpenVZ- I bought a dual socket F motherboard and having a hard time getting OpenVZ to run on it. I'm wondering if the board is compatible. It's a Tyan S2932 and the OpenVZ kernel crashes on it. (2.6.24 kernel)
I've flashed the latest bios.
So - thinking about returning the MB and getting something else. What MB is compatible with OpenVZ?
Specs:
2 socket F for quad core opterons.
16 momery slots.
Thanks in advance

Wired Tree - 8 minutes to reply to support ticket...- ...and it wasn't even about my server or their service. I asked them regarding how to set up another [cheap] VPS in my DNS as a backup/playground. My support ticket was tagged "low" priority.
8 minutes! - what took them so long :)

VPS Maintenace guide- Hi,
I purchased my first VPS a month ago, and as it is only semi-managed I will have to do a lot of the administrating myself. Do any of you know of a guide anywhere that will help me get to grips with this on a centos system? I use an ubuntu deriative as a desktop OS and so I have basic linux knowledge, however I have never used a RPM based distro so this is new.
Thanks,
Alec

WHT - Reseller Hosting Forum

Reseller Hosting with Support?- I am looking for reseller hosting... and hopefully not someone doing several layers of reselling
My main thing is support... i have the clientelle but need support included... and i can get the billing app...eg)whmcs...
so far i have found http://innohosting.com/ and then even have support and billing app included... Any other comparables out there?

Help me get started please - total beginner- Hi,
I finally bought a resellers account on Windows. It allows me to partition the space and bandwidth for 10 domains. I plan to use 1 of these accounts myself to host my website to sell Windows hosting and domains.
My reseller plan is at netlogistics
So what comes next? I guess I need a shopping cart type process for people to buy domains and my plans. I guess I also need scripts to set up the plans and register domain names from a registry? Need to set up billing and email to remind customers to extend plans and domains etc
I've seen programs that might do all this that run on php but I'm setting up what seems to be more a aspx type setup.
Please tell me what programs I need to set all this up on windows... thanks

ballpark income from reselling - one-man part-time??- Hello,
Just curious. Not asking for any personal information.
Im just wondering what I might be looking at earning, if I were to go into reselling and just doing it all by myself part-time at night. Just ballpark figures. How many accounts would I have to sell a year or a week?
Also, how time consuming can it be - say if you have 100 clients or something like that - I mean with the emailing, answering questions, and administrative work, etc.
It seems like something worth trying..

ExcellentHost 10 months review- Sorry for my poor english.

I host my clients and friends sites, I'm not a reseller, I'm a designer. Little sites with 20 to 500 unique visitors/day. Pages are loaded fast.
Just WHM control page sometimes take a little long to load from here, Italy.
Ping is about 55/58 ms
Support: sufficient Ticket reply in 6-22 hours. Should be better but from a ticket reply today I know that soon it will be integrated with PolurNet one, which is better.
Chat and Forum are not active, so I must to use the PolurNet ones.
I'm very satisfied of Excellent, they don't allow overselling and this is an important plus for me. Usually I use Joomla as CMS and it works fine on my account. Maybe for bigger sites I need other type of account, but after a lot of experience on other services into the last 10 years (some negative, just take look at my old posts) I think this is the right one. Hoping the support will be really soon integrated with PolurNet and hoping to find a solution to send out newsletter because they limit to 200 email :-)

eirca.net- I already with them for almost 1 year now, but recently their uptime seem go down. My sites keep up and down. Some online, some go off line or slow loading. I can say, is time to change host again. Just wonder, anyone with them? How your websites performance? Any recommend of alternative host?

Domain seller, Reseller and Script -- Hi Guys,
I got few personal sites with Resellerzoom. So far I didn't have any problems. Now I'm thinking to start hositng business to generate some extra money. I'm looking for a reseller who supports selling domain also. I want a package where customer could search for domains, purchase and manage it. I'm also looking into php scripts that manages the package and customers order and handle the billing sytem.
If you know any sites who gives you API access to purchase and mange domains from our site will be good also. I can't find the right direction or info. I've heard about ENOM but not sure how it works.
If you are doing similiar business where you are selling domains and hosting sites and you are using some kind of billing software please share with me.
Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Experience with HostNine?- Anyone have any experience with HostNine. I'm think of moving a number of clients from a dedicated box to Reseller hosting.
The thing that really attracted me was the ability to choose server location, along with price and billing system.

transferring whm/cpanel accounts to a new host- Hi,
I am changing hosts, moving everything to resellerzoom. What's the best/quickest way to do the transfer, as I have about 10 cpanel accounts?
Thank you for any suggestions.

CPanel vs. HSphere and with whom?- I've been a vortech customer for 4+ years now. They have been my first reseller program, and i'm looking at options. Before then, i didn't know much about reselling (doing my own stuff at 1and1 and hostway.) With that, HSphere was my first and only platform.
In looking at a possible change, the one thing i'm not sure of is the back end: HSphere versus CPanel. Is there any major functional difference? Or is it just getting used to one or the other. I'm pretty familar and very comfortable on HSPhere. I've only used CPanel on a few occassions for some of my web design clients who hosted on others' Cpanel accounts. I also tried a demo account at Hostgator to surf around a bit, but quickly fell off that boat as i had no real reason to change and i didn't want to be paying for 2 reseller accounts. HS seemed much more user friendly than CP.
But mow, I'm up for possibly changing, if it's worth it. I would love to stay with HSphere if there's resellers with good reliability, etc. Seems like Jodohost, Cartika, and XXXXS (i forget from another post)
On the cpanel side, seems like Hostgator would be a reliable pick.
Am I missing others?
Generally I'd rather pay some good $$ for reliability and service/support, as opposed to getting more bells and whistles and unlimited junk. So price will be at the bottom of my list. I've got about 50 accounts and near 100 domains and I can't afford any more major outages.
Side note: One functional thing i couldn't (easily) find on Cpanel, was the "instant access domain alias" feature that HSphere has - where you could access a site through "the back door" - perfect for moving new sites in from other hosts - allowing for bumpless transfers, testing of sites before domain names are assigned. Does CPanel have this?

Questions abount reseller, regarding if a client asks for??...- Let's say I am a client and I want to do this:
Could me? a web hosting company do this?
Is it possible for me to upgrade additional web space? How will I modify that? can I add let's say 1mb to that account?Or, they have to upgrade to the next plan?My bandwidth is full? Can you add more like 1gb more for a month? is this possible?
A couple of my concerns before signing up! :) Hope you could help me guys!
thanks!

Anyone know of a reliable email reseller- Hi,
Does anyone know of a good email reseller (one who can host unlimited email boxes...one for each new sign-up)? I have had a look at 'everyone.com' but they start at $99 a month...
Gmail...how can you make money with them. Gmail conditions are that they place ads but don't share revenue?
Thanks for looking.

I have geekstorage in mind.they have a reseller plan for $10
http://www.geekstorage.com/gs/service/reseller
Is it good or there are any other hosts better fit my requirement?or shall i go for different shared hosting package for each website?
Thanks in advance !

Will a VPS work for me?- Hi,
I have 5-6 sites of my own and also hosting around 12 client sites.
Currently these sites are distributed over 3 shared hosting accounts and one reseller hosting account.
I want to move everything to a VPS server.
How much RAM will I need? Will Wiredtree's "384MB Guaranteed SLM RAM" plan work for me? I will need cPanel also.
Here is a rough breakup of my sites:
1. One TextPattern blog with 6-7K uniques per month.
2. Three custom coded PHP sites with approx. 1K uniques per month
3. Two CMS sites with moderate traffic
4. Rest are static HTML or sites with simple components like News, FAQs etc.
Thanks,
Jatinder
